This is a guest post from Lifestyle Chiropractic patient Eric Winebrinner.
Recovery: After an event or injury, recovery is the most important thing that can be done. Recovery is half of what my guest posts have been about. It is simple and we know we need to do it. We exercise and we should stretch afterward, right? How many of us do that? How many of us have an injury and don’t treat it? What does it take to get motivated to do what our bodies need?
Here are a few practical steps and a mindset that can help motivate us to be successful in recovery. 1) put it on the calendar 2) have an accountability partner 3) reward yourself (food, shopping, time off) 4) punishment, if that works for you (cannot watch your favorite show, fine yourself and write a check to a charity).
Here is a mindset: if life is busy, hard or financially difficult now when we are injured does life seem harder? Our body doesn’t perform well so life feels busier and we physically can’t do the things we enjoy. We are not efficient at our job so we make less money or miss the promotion. Life is better when we are healthy! $40 here, $60 there adds up and does cost money to become healthy, but what is the real cost of unhappiness?
I choose to bite the bullet and get healthy. Yes, it was expensive. Yes, it took time out of my day. And yes, I didn’t want to do it. The cost of my happiness is priceless, and just like the commercial I choose happiness and healthy. After my big trip to Nepal, I went in to see Dr. Dillan at Lifestyle Chiropractic. A month later of weekly treatments I am happy to say I’m feeling great. Life is full of choices, choose happiness.
Hiking tip: Take a wilderness first aid class. The class is full of practical situations of backcountry injuries where help can be hours or days away.
